3 REASONS TO START LEARNING A LANGUAGE TODAY

Published 15/04/2015 In Blog

Easier travelling, more job opportunities and a more exercised mind are only three of the several benefits of learning languages

Language is the tool by which we communicate our identity, shape our dreams and desires and learn about those of others.

In today’s society the ability to communicate beyond our own communities is ever more essential, and this is resulting in more people than ever being classified as multi-lingual.

Whether it be English, Spanish, Mandarin, Russian or French, learning a language can enrich your life in 3 main ways.

1. TRAVELLING MADE EASY

Firstly, as someone who loves to travel, knowing the local language has enriched my experience of people and places.

The camera allowed me to capture the people above, but it was being able to communicate with them in their native language that allowed me to capture a sense of who they were, where they had come from and what they held most dear.

Ibrahim from Senegal and his trusted steed Lampefall, Fatima from Morocco who loved nothing more than climbing the foothills of Mount Atlas, Raksa from Cambodia who so happily gave her time to help her mother on the boat and Noah the Capoeira dancer from Israel who wanted to take his show to Rio!

2. DON’T FALL SHORT IN YOUR NEXT INTERVIEW

Learning a language can also greatly enhance your job opportunities.

As companies seek to expand their operations across geographical boundaries, the need for multi-lingual workers is becoming more and more important.

This is evident from the number of job advertisements that now categorise bilingualism as an ‘essential skill’ rather than a ‘preferred’ or ‘optional’ skill.

The bottom line is: if you are turning up to an interview and you aren’t able to introduce yourself in at least two languages, then chances are the person that can will be employed ahead of you.

Knowing Mandarin enabled me to work in China; knowing English, French, Italian and Spanish meant that I was headhunted for positions. Being multi-lingual, especially in today’s multi-national work environment, has opened doors that would have remained firmly bolted had I not invested in learning languages.

3. KEEP YOUR BRAIN TRAINED

As well as enriching your travel experiences and work opportunities, learning a language is also beneficial for your health and well-being: exercising the mind is just as important as exercising the body. Indeed, research has shown that learning can benefit you both physically and psychologically.

So, whatever your reason, be it to make the most of your travels, to maximise your job opportunities or simply engage your mind, you can be assured that learning a language today will serve you well in the future.
